The United States Army Corps of Engineers was established in 1802 as part of an act signed by President Thomas Jefferson as part of the United States Army. Its mission revolves around engineering requirements for military construction and civil works. Military construction projects included constructing landmark war sites such as the Manhattan Project in the desert at Los Alamos, Washington monument in D.C. and even the Panama Canal in 1914. The Corps became the lead federal navigation and flood control agency, and closer to us geographically, designed and created hydroelectric power, wildlife habitat, navigation, irrigation supplies, outdoor recreation and flood control through six Missouri River Mainstem Reservoir system dams.
