(30 POINTS!) EASY
1. (The rise of the Mongols, 1200-1260)
During the late twelfth century, a Mongol chief, named Temujin, united the independent nomadic tribes of central Asia. In 1206 tribal leaders bestowed on him the title “Chinggis Khan” (or “Genghis Khan”), which many historians believe is a derivation of the word tenggis, or “oceanic.” Along with khan, or leader, this implies the title of “universal leader.” During the next fifty years, Chinggis Khan and his successors built the largest land-based empire in history.
