In 1350, the largest and most powerful society in West Africa was the Songhail
Empire, which controlled the major trade cities of Gao, Timbuktu, and Djenné.
The empire was filled with many different people. One important group was the
Songhal people. They mostly lived in a small territory outside of Mall along the
Niger River, but some of them lived inside the empire around the city of
Timbuktu.
