Read through the following scenarios. For each scenario, answer whether you think the actions were ethical or not. Explain your response and identify how the actions were ethical or unethical. Would you have acted differently, and if so, how? Explain the ethics behind your solution.
Sara wants to write an article about locker theft at her school. She sneaks into the school resource officer’s office to watch the school’s security cameras and try to catch the thief. The video from the camera is black and white and a little bit grainy, but Sara thinks she spots the thief. She publishes an article on the front page of the paper proclaiming “Thief Caught!” and including the student’s name. Did Sara act ethically?
Joe is writing a story on bullying. He gets a few students to anonymously tell him their stories. However, when he is writing the article, he decides it will be more interesting and believable if he includes the students’ names. When the bully reads the article and finds out who told on him, he bullies these students even more until a teacher steps in. Did Joe act ethically?
Every Saturday morning, a news station puts on a special news show for kids. One Saturday, that news show airs a story about drugs, skimpy clothing and plays background music with bad words in the lyrics. Did the news station act ethically?
In a story about a lottery winner, the journalist includes a photo of the lottery winner’s house. The house number and street sign are visible in the photo. Did the journalist act ethically?
A journalist is asked to write a story about a new type of soda. He gives it rave reviews and encourages people to go out and buy it. The journalist owns stock in the company that makes the soda. Did the journalist act ethically?
