The Marshall Court was the period in the history of the Supreme Court under
Chief Justice John Marshall. The Marshall Court was the first to rule a law
unconstitutional, in the case Marbury v. Madison. This case began the judicial
branch's use of judicial review to strike down laws that went against the
Constitution.
The Marshall Court set many important laws, or decisions that later courts have
to follow. Many of these decisions, like McCulloch v. Maryland or Gibbons v.
Ogden, increased the power of the federal, or national, government.
