L. Hernandez speech to the Jennings ISD school board on April 6, 2018 My name is Mario Longoria, and I have been a student in Jennings ISD for nine years. I am the student council president of my high school, and I am here tonight to ask you to end corporal, or physical, punishment in our schools. As of 2016, states in dark blue allow corporal punishment in schools. Corporal punishment is used by teachers who want to control their students’ behavior. However, studies have shown that this behavior provides students with the message that violence is the only way to solve problems. This is not the kind of message we need to be sending to our youth. Another reason to end corporal punishment in our schools is because of the effects it has on children. Many students are injured as a result of being paddled. Some end up with bruises or cuts. A few have even suffered more serious injuries and have ended up in the hospital. This type of punishment is abusive to our children and should not be tolerated. There are many other ways to influence student behavior in positive ways. For example, teachers can use a reward system to encourage good behavior. Another solution is to come up with creative punishments, such as limiting computer time or recess time. Teachers could keep students from participating in class activities such as parties or field trips. These consequences would serve the same purpose as corporal punishment without causing physical harm. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my concerns. I am a proud member of Jennings ISD and want the best for our students, just as you do. I hope that you will make the right decision and end corporal punishment.
