A whispering gallery is usually a circular, hemispherical, elliptical or ellipsoidal enclosure, often beneath a dome or a vault, in which whispers can be heard clearly in other parts of the gallery. The Whispering Gallery works because of how sound waves bounce around the inside of the curved section of wall.

The Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol is one of these whispering galleries and is elliptical in shape . It measures 46 feet wide and 96 feet long. If a person is standing at one focus, a whisper can be heard by another person standing at the other focus!
