Russel always worked in his family business as a farmer, planting and harvesting crops. He never married, and now he lives on his own following the death of his mother, who had a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. Russel was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 19 years old and had many admissions to the inpatient units. His treatment included prolonged periods of seclusion and physical restraint and several treatments of Electroconvulsive Therapy.
