During the past 40 years, close to 20% of the Amazon rain forest has been cut down, more than in all the previous 450 years since European colonization began. Scientists predict that an additional 20% of the trees will be lost over the next 20 years as humans clear the natural landscape to make room for farms and pastures, to harvest timber for construction and fuel, and to build roads and urban areas. Although tropical forests cover only about 7% of the Earth’s dry land, they probably contain about half of all species on Earth. The impacts of such deforestation are far-reaching, both on Earth now and for future generations. How will future generations be impacted? Choose ALL that could apply.
