It is debatable that economic growth causes democratization or
not. Larry Diamond and Juan Linz, in the book, Democracy in Developing Countries: Latin America, argue that
economic performance affects the democratization process. They argue that
economic development causes socioeconomic development and the latter brings
social changes, which is important for the democratization.
