This problem can certainly be done using the distance formula. However, you'd find it much faster to graph these 3 points and then read off the vertical and horiz. distances directly from your graph. From P to Q is 4 units; from Q to R is 3 units, and from R to S is 7 units. The total length of the trail is 4+3+7, or 14 (units).
