A psychologist would more typically deal with the emotional problems of people who don't suffer from serious neurologically or biochemically caused disorders.

In contrast, a psychologist would deal for example with schizophrenia, which need medication, and cannot be treated only by therapy.

A similarity is that both are doctors or scientists who deal with people's mental and emotional health.

Psychologist and psychiatrist deals with mental health but both are not the same. Although both study the human mind. Psychologist and psychiatrists could have a meeting with patient to discuss thoughts, behaviors and trouble feelings. Such meeting is known as psychotherapy.  

Having highlighted the similarities, there is also a bit of distinct differences between psychiatrists and psychologists.

As medical doctors, psychiatrists specialize in the treatment of mental illness. They earn an MD after attending a college, Medical school and residency. They may also undergo a specialize training known as fellowship that could last for a period of about 2 to 3 years. Psychiatrists must be licensed and certified by board members before they can be able to practice in all states. Some psychiatrists also specialize in addition pain medicine, psychiatry, epilepsy, sleep medicine and other areas of specialization. As a physician, they have a broad knowledge of how the body functions in relations to mental illness. They can prescribe medication and treatment and hospitalized patients. The annual salary of a psychiatrist by the bureau of labor statistics as at 2013 is put at $182,660.

On the other hand, psychologists study human thoughts, emotions, and behaviors including social interactions. Psychological mostly specializes in clinical, counseling, school or industrial psychology.

Some psychologists have a master’s degree or doctoral degree. A psychologists would require a license to practice if works independently or directly with patients. A psychologist does not require a board certification to practice. Though, clinical psychologists, rehabilitation or neuro-psychology must be board certified. Like a psychiatrist, a clinical psychology can diagnose and treat mental illness, but are not authorized to prescribed medication or order lab test. They can also organize a meeting between them and patients. According to bureau of statistics, psychologists’ salary was put at $74,310 in 2013.
