I believe the answer is: faith in human reason
Enlightenment philosophers advocated the people to use their logic/reasoning when they are observing a certain problem rather than basing them on superstitions. This type of thinking encourage many scientists to studies various natural phenomenon that lead to the advancement of society as we see today.
