Henry Clay 's American system was a plan to unite North and South America into one big nation. Its three principles consisted on these three reinforcing precepts: 1) a tariff aimed to enhance American industry, 2) the creation of a national bank to increase commerce, 3) federal subsidies to help build and maintain roads and other ways of internal communication in order to foster a strong market for agriculture.
