Seismographs are used to detect earthquakes and also extrapolate their epicenters. More than one seismographs are required to locate the epicenter through a mathematical method called Triangulation. The epicenter can also be extrapolated by using an extrapolation map that deduces the distance to epicenter using the difference in time between the primary and secondary waves of the earthquake.
