In the presidential election, New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson defeated Republican President William Howard Taft and former Progressive Party president and candidate Theodore Roosevelt. Eugene Debs, the leader of the socialist union, campaigned for the fourth time and won 6 percent of the votes.
In this election, Democrats nominated Woodrow Wilson and gave him a powerful and progressive platform called the New Freedom Program. The Republican Party was split into Taft and Roosevelt's Blumouse Party in the "New Nationalism" program.
Many thought it was a favorite to win Hughes, but after a fierce battle Wilson defeated him with nearly 600,000 of the approximately 18.5 million votes cast in the popularity poll. Wilson secured a majority of the narrow electoral college by sweeping Solid South and winning some swing states with a very thin margin.
