A total of 444 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. The number of student tickets sold was three times the number of adult tickets sold. How many adult tickets were sold?

First make an equation

444=x+y
3x=y

(X=adult tickets, y=student tickets)

So then fill in y from the second equation into the first

So
444=x+3x
So x=444/4
So x=111
Y=444-111=333

Lets verify
3*111=333

So answer 111 tickets

333 and 111

111+333=444
