I used an ancient TI-83 Plus calculator (with built-in statistical functions) to address this question.  When the area under the std. norm. curve is given and the corresponding z-score is wanted, we use the function "invNorm(  ).

Here, I typed in invNorm(0.94) and obtained the result 1.555.

Thus: When the area under the standard normal curve to the left is 0.94, the corresponding z value is 1.555.
