They wanted a better life than the one they were living, so they knew they'd have to work for a few years but would be free at one point

Many people were willing to become indentured servants because at the end of the set amount of time they had to work, they’d be given free passage to America, where they could resettle and build a better life for themselves. Indentured servitude was especially common among African Americans for a time, as many of them were very poor and could not afford to pay for the journey to America themselves.
