However, Andrew Jackson didn’t address any issue concerning the tariff of abomination and this caused a disagreement between him and Calhoun, his vice president. To show his displeasure towards the president's failure to address the tariff issue, Calhoun composed a pamphlet, which was titled “South Carolina Exposition and Protest,”. The pamphlet was published anonymously and proposed the theory of nullification.
The theory of nullification state that the states have the right to reject any federal law they deem illegal. Calhoun expressed that since the Federal government powers originated from the consent of the states, then the states have the legal right to nullify any law they deem unconstitutional.
However, the theory of nullification which maintained that south Carolina could declare a federal law as null and void brought about a constitutional crisis.
