The Enlightenment was a period in the history of Europe during which new ideas and philosophies developed. Many of these focused on reason, and on the predominance of logic over traditional sources of knowledge such as the Church and superstition. This new way of thinking also brought a more revolutionary approach to politics, and a new understanding of humans as individuals.

All of these ideas affected the traditional views supported by the Christian Church. Many people believed that the Church should no longer be involved in politics or enjoy so much power. Others believed that science could explain the world better than religion could. All of this diminished the dominance that the Church had on society.

The Enlightenment Era was a period in Europe which marked the introduction of new ideas, rational thinking and development of philosophies.

However, before this era in Europe, some church believers based their major thinking on traditional sources of knowledge such as from Church and superstition.

The dawn of the Enlightenment had a profound effect on Christian believer because many of them found the enlightened view of the world consistent with Christian beliefs and thus, used the rational thinking as support for the existence and benevolence of God.
