Louis XIV was a leader that wanted to have absolute power and control over his country, so he was not choosing means to achieve that. Before Louis XIV came in power, France for some time had a religious tolerance between the two large religious groups, the Catholics and the Protestants (also known as Huguenots). Then Louis XIV decided to not respect the Edict of Nantes which was balancing the things between the two religious groups, and he started to persecute the Huguenots. He forbid the practicing of the Protestantism in France. Initially a supporter of the Gallicanism, Louis still made the Catholicism the only religion in France. Weirdly enough, he made the Catholicism the only religioun in the country despite having very bad relations with the pope.
The persecution of the Protestants was constantly increasing, so the people that were practicing it were trying to emigrate from the country. Louis XIV though had another plan. He banned the emigration, so the Protestants ended up trapped in France. Louis XIV did this in order to forcefully convert them to Catholicism and largely managed to. Louis XIV did a lot of damage on his image and reputation across Europe with this move.
