Purkinje cells are neurons located in the cortex of cerebellum named after their discoverer-Jan Evangelista Purkyně.

Those neurons are one of the largest in the brain, with flasklike cell body, a huge number of dendrites and dentritic spines and a single axone. There is a whole layer of these cells in the cerebellum called Purkinje layer. Purkinje cells send inhibitory projections to the deep cerebellar nuclei, so they are a class of GABAergic (relese GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid) neurons which control motor movement.
