Italian General, politician, Italian nationalist. Born in Sardinia, he became an apprentice seaman where he sailed the Mediterranean and got to know the other Italian City-States. He joined Mazzini and the revolutionary secret society, Young Italy in 1833. They plotted to overthrow the king of Sardinia and failed, and he fled to South America. There he organized a group of Italian exiles to help fight for Uruguay’s independence from Argentina. Despite his exile he never gave up on his dream of uniting Italy.
