The English working class began to decrease dramatically in the nineteenth century as the gap between the rich and poor expanded. This created a larger poor population, labor force was much needed. Social norms of the Victorian Era included a massive patriarchal system, public degradation (including beatings and such), and discrimination and tension between the social classes.
