They became very oppressed and things with German roots like hamburgers, sausage, and some city names were changed to American "Patriotic" names.

German-Americans suffered a lot because of wartime patriotism. It mostly devastated their cultural heritage, they endured discrimination, abuse, rejection, and mistrust of the American people. 

To live a normal integrated life, German-Americans had to remove all vestiges of their heritage and become full Americans. This eventually led to the end of many German-language institutions and German cultural institutions in the US.
