A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. It is used to create imagery and meaning in texts.

A metaphor is a comparison of at least 2 things, but it does no use the words “like” or “as” in it. Metaphors are commonly used in literature to describe something in more detail and it’s a very important literary term to understand.

An example of a metaphor is below.

His face was a red tomato.

This is an example of a metaphor because it is comparing his face to a tomato. This probably means that he was a little embarrassed by something that happened. This is a metaphor because it does not use the words “like” or “as” in it.
