The American agrarian movement during 1870's and 1880's is known as farmers alliance. Its main goal was to improve the economic conditions for farmers by creating cooperatives and political representation. The movement was made up local organisation and it later got divided into three large groupings.
The various chapters of farmers alliance set up cooperatives to sell goods at lower prices. They also built mills and storehouses to decrease the cost of bringing goods to the market and also raised political demands.
They were in support of government ownership of railways, decrease in tariffs, abolition of national banks and establishment of government warehouses. The leaders of farmers alliance were successful at ground level but not at the national level, hence they founded Populist party in 1891 to pursue their goal at national level.
