In ancient China it was believed in what events the sky directly reflected events on earth. The tradition said that first the rulers of China, first kings and then the emperors should receive their political mandates from heaven. For this reason, astronomy soon became a dominant science in China. It was also thought that the emperor was the Son of Heaven to whom Heaven himself had given the Mandate and the right to rule.
