The Civil War started because of the uncompromising differences between free and slave states. Many states in the South (slave states) wanted to preserve the institution of slavery. Others minimize slavery and looked at other factors like, taxation and the principle of states rights. The moral issue and economics of slavery are the main cause of the bloodiest conflict in North American history.
