A series of public discussions which engulfed the attraction of the public and the newspapers began to publicize it. It was none other than those were Lincoln Douglas debates.

Slavery and expansion of it to territories such as Nebraska and Kansas and Popular sovereignty were the topics discussed. The topics were so delicate that Stephen Douglas who aspired to be the president argued favor of slavery and hence he was alienated from the team of Democrats.

The next outcome was that Lincoln’ persuasive speech made Douglas to affirm with the principle of popular sovereignty and also the related issue of slavery. Douglas was triumphant in senatorial election and Lincoln published the debate and congregated huge support and appreciation which made him win the elections of presidential office.
