The first wave were people from England. Most of them were escaping religious prosecution from the King of England. The second wave of immigrants during the late 1800s was due to an influx of Europeans and Asians leaving their homeland because of poverty (example, Potato Famine in Ireland) or better life prospects. The first wave came largely from northern and central Europe; the second wave came largely from southern and eastern Europe.
