Further Explanation
The Most Dangerous Game is a short story written by Richard Connell. In the story, Rainsford is traveling off the coast of an island when he falls overboard and must swim to shore to save himself. The men aboard his boat call the island "Shiptrap Island" because many ships have never returned after dropping anchor there. Rainsford soon finds out why. The man who owns the island, General Zaroff, is an expert hunter. He enjoys the sport of hunting, but tells Rainsford that animals are not smart enough for him. The game of hunting is no longer enjoyable because he is too smart for his prey. However, he has found a solution - hunt people. Since Rainsford is known to also be an excellent hunter, General Zaroff is delighted that he will have such a strong opponent. He tells Rainsford that if he cannot catch him after a certain period, Rainsford will be free to leave the island safely. Thus the hunting ensues.
Four Different Types of Conflict
Man vs. Man - when one person goes against another. It is an external conflict because the character is fighting a force outside of himself.
Man vs. Nature - This occurs when the person or character is going against a force of nature such as a storm, flood, or other natural disaster. Since the battle is with something outside of the person it is considered an external conflict.
Man vs. Society - This occurs when the person goes against societal rules or expectations. For example, if a student who was expected to wear a school uniform to school did not, the student would be going against the rules of the school/society.
Man vs. Self - This is an internal conflict that takes place within a person or character. It shows itself mainly during a difficult decision. The person is in conflict over what to decide. An example would be Rapunzel's decision on whether or not to leave her tower in the movie Tangled.
