When a glacier continually melts underneath, basal slipping occurs. Because of the melting, the meltwater acts as a lubricant, causing the glacier to slowly slide over the bedrock. The actual movement has different factors, some being the size and the angle of the glacier, as well as the amount of meltwater present.
