In this short story, it tells about two sisters coping with the loss of their tyrannical father. The father blamed the sisters for everything and they were scared of what he would say or do even after his death.

In the story, there are several instances where servants and professional people are being rude to the sisters but they are to scared to say anything or act on firing the servant. The sisters are very indecisive and can't think for themselves and have trouble deciding on who to give the fathers watch too.

At the end of the story, the sisters start to tell each other something important and then both say "I forgot what I was going to say." This makes the reader wonder if they forgot or was to afraid to speak what was on their mind.
