In 1808, August Zeune, a German geographer created the concept of the Balkans. The Balkan peninsular extends to Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and some other south-eastern European countries.  Two notable conflicts erupted in those areas in 1912 and 1913. In the first conflict, the Ottoman Empire was defeated and during the second conflict, the Bulgarians fought against all the four combatants in the first that took place a year before. Economic alliances were not notable factors that triggered he conflicts unlike the religious differences, loyalty and anger from past conflicts.
