In his farewell address, Washington used the term “spirit of party” to represent, as we call them today, political parties. He greatly opposed the forming of these parties as he saw them as a competition for power in the government would follow after their establishment. In turn, the politicians would be seeking for power in the party rather than seeking what is best for the country.
