This question requires a personal opinion about the advice given in the poem as well as a personal answer concerning advice you received in life. The following is an example of how to answer it:
I believe the advice the mother gives her son in the poem is inspiring. Their life is not easy, and he may often think of giving up. However, he must keep in mind that others, including his own mother, fought long and hard to get him where he is now. To give up would be to throw their efforts away.
I have received similar advice in life from my parents. They were both extremely poor growing up and had to fight to accomplish their goals in life. They would tell me, "Remember where you come from," in the sense that I should remember I come from a family of hard-working people.
A metaphor I could used to share that advice with a friend is of an ant. An ant, on its own, may not seem strong or able to accomplish much. But a family, a group of ants is powerful. Their hard work accomplishes a lot.
Writing a personal answer
For the first part of this answer, think of what your opinion really is concerning the poem "Mother to Son". Ask yourself if you can relate to the poem, if you can understand what the mother means.
For the second part, try to remember some good advice you were given in life. It may have come from a parent, a grandparent, or even a friend. In case you can't remember anything, talk to someone about it so that you can come up with ideas.
A metaphor is a comparison used to convey an idea. In the poem, the mother uses stairs as a metaphor for her difficulties in life. Ask yourself what metaphor you could use to convey the advice you have decided to talk about.
