You set up a pose for a puppet and take a picture of it, and then change the position again and then you take another picture, and so on and so forth until you're done and you can create an animation. It's not miniatures because stop motion can be done even with items larger than yourself. Pyrotechnics are especially not good for it because they cannot be paused.
