The main goal was economic, was to extract resources from the colony, and take them to the mother country (the European power). These resources could be gold, silver, sugar, tobacco, cotton, and so on.
This goal was achieved by all European Powers, in many cases for hundreds of years. European powers benefited from this extraction of resources up to this day.
Another goal, but secondary, was to implant European culture in the colonies.
In some colonies, this was achieved, for example, the English colonies in North America, which is the origin of the United States, had a very western culture.
In other colonies, this was not achieved. For example, India was a colony of England, and while English culture has influenced India in some ways, the culture of Indian is still predominantly native.
The various goals of the colonial European powers in the expansion of their empires were:

This refers to the process of overtaking another country by a much more stronger entity who then rules over them.
