The word TRAUMA meant "physical injury" to the Greeks and to the
Romans who commandeered it. The medical profession adopted it around
1690, and its meaning remained unchanged until the late 19th century,
when psychologists used it to describe emotional injury cause by an
intensely negative experiences. After several decades of popular misuse,
