those who toiled hard all of their lives were treated well when they became old and could no longer work.
it was possible to learn a trade, hire themselves out, and make enough money to eventually buy their freedom.
food was dispensed on a weekly basis, and although it wasn't much, it was healthy and nutritious.
clothing was handed out once a year and was only given to those who could continue to work.
