The two extinct species that share a close evolutionary relationship with humpback whales include dorudon and basilosaurus.
The similarities between these species and humpback whales include the fact that they had tailfins and their elbow joints were able to lock and this allowed the forelimb to have better control and resist the oncoming flow of water as the animal propelled itself forward.
It should also be noted that the hindlimbs of these animals were almost nonexistent and they were so tiny that many scientists think they served no effective function and may have even been internal to the body wall.
