A speech can be defined as an act which involves formally talking or speaking to an audience (listeners), in order to explain an idea, piece of work, project, and product with or without the aid of multimedia resources.
According to purpose, there are three (3) types of speech and these include:
- Expository (informative) speech.
According to delivery, there are four (4) types of speech and these include:
A. Manuscript speech: this type of speech is used when you need to do a word-for-word iteration of a textual information by using visual aids such as a teleprompter.
B. Memorized speech: this type of speech is used when you need to rote recite a written message that you have committed to memory such as an actress's dialogue.
C. Extemporaneous speech: it is used when delivering a carefully planned and rehearsed speech that is conversationally spoken while using brief notes such as during a political campaign speech.
D. Impromptu speech: it is used in the delivery of short response without any form of preparation prior to the presentation. Thus, it is mainly for experts and professionals in a particular field such as electrical engineers, medical doctors, journalists, etc.
