Mono Lake is a large lake located in Mono County, California. The lake is thought to have been formed somewhere around 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lake is relatively shallow. Because of its location in a very sunny and hot place which, its shallowness, and lack of an outlet, the water from the lake is evaporating immensely because the lake itself warms up very quickly and easily and this contributes to the forming and accumulating of salt in the lake. Since this is a process throughout most of the year the amount of salt in the water has become very big over time so the lake has become hypersaline with its salinity of 40 parts per thousand nowadays.
