They felt exploited. This is why they had so many riots and Union Strikes. They paid the workers a minimal wage and kept the money for themselves. The companies such as the steel companies had monopolies which allowed them to buy the products to make steel cheaper and faster than their competitors. They also owned the railsystem that transported their products..so they could get their products to market cheaper than a competitor could.
