The next morning Francois discovers Spitz missing and buck covered in wounds. Francois realizes that he thinks he has earned the lead position and will be satisfied with nothing less. The team cover the 30 mile river run in one day. The reach Skaguay in record time. Perrault and Francois soon received official orders that take them elsewhere and they exit from bucks life. The dogs reach dawson tired and are being treated well except for dave who is suffering from a weird disease no ones knows about. Dave howled mournfully as the team road away before a shot rang out. Buck knew and every dog knew what had taken place behind the belt of river trees...
