Well if you determine the point of view of the story I would read it in my head and that out loud so I can understand it a little more then I would underline or highlight the sources and when I finish doing that I start typing things that come out of my head about the story.

I would also look for signifiers that we know everything, such as the narrator talking to the reader specifically (2nd person [Tale of Desperaux]), or someone talking about events that happened to them (1st person [Diary Of a Wimpy Kid]), or an omniscient party talking to us through current events or a memory (3rd Person [Hunger Games])
