Excerpt: The people in the uppermost level of the caste system were known as Brahmins. They
were believed to have come from Brahma's head and held professions of teachers and priests. The
second level, rulers and warriors who came from Brahma's arms, were the Kshatriya. The next level
was composed of artisans, farmers, and traders. They were called the Vaisya, and they were from
Brahma's thighs. The lowest caste level, the Shudra, came from Brahma's feet and included tenant
farmers and servants. Another group of people, the untouchables, existed outside of the caste
system because they were considered to be unclean. They performed tasks such as cleaning after
funerals.
Claim: The clearly defined occupations of the different castes created a country of people
interdependent upon one another economically and socially.
