Slavery was a topic of debate that threatened the hopes of a new federal constitution and the very union itself. Many southern states wanted their slaves to be counted as part of their population. This would give slave-holding states an advantage in the House of Representatives and in the Electoral College.
South and north disagreed with many of their ideas the southerners wanted to keep slavery for power such as the 3/5ths compromise that would count 3/5ths of a person to count as population and for tax.Of they had more population they can use them for voting people.However the north disagreed and said that it was unfair because slaves weren’t even given rights and they shouldn’t be counted . The south even threatened that their states will secede from the nation if they ever ban slavery so it was important because it can either unite or break the nation
